This village played an interesting role in the Indian Freedom Struggle. During the Quit India Movement, On 24th August 1942 a group of people from Kannampalayam, Irugur and Singanallur burnt down the Motor shed in the British Air base at Sulur. 22 Lorries were destroyed and 3 lorry drivers were killed.
Kannampalayam K.V.Ramasamy, Ondipudur "Boo Boo Ramu" were among the 16 accused in this case. Ramasamy ut up posters all over the place announcing that he would give Rs. 1,000 (a princely sum then and double what the British announced) to anyone who could catch him.
