military, place with historical importance, fortification, interesting place
Built in 1691, by Frontenac after the British attack of 1690, it was once one of the main elements in Québec City’s defence system. It was named the Royal Battery after King Louis IVX. The battery took part in the seige of Quebec in 1759, but was destroyed. With the end of the Seven Years War, The battery was no longer needed and fell into disuse by 1763.
Located on the original shoreline of the river, the battery was soon built over with wharves and warehouses and disappeared until 1977 when it was restored. The Royal Battery gunner is in attendance during the summer, and invites you to learn how to fire a cannon.
