Almaden Plaza was originally built on 31 Acres of land by Emporium in 1967 (the building at the top, nearest the 85 off ramp). After Emporium closed, the first floor was home to buy buy BABY, Barnes & Noble, and some smaller tenants. buy buy BABY closed in 2023, and Barnes & Noble closed in January 2025. In fall 2025, Sports Basement will open in the spaces formerly occupied by buy buy BABY, Barnes & Noble, and two smaller tenants. The second floor became Bed Bath & Beyond and Diddam's after Emporium went out of business, but both of those tenants later closed. Hobby Lobby now occupies a large portion of the second floor. The third floor, which was offices and the employee break room for Emporium is now used as storage by Almaden Plaza's owners, likely where they keep the Christmas decor on top of the old Emporium Building when it is not in use.
The exterior still is basically the same from Emporium, (except for the Hobby Lobby and future Sports Basement facades) even in the part where it is white, above the old entry doors to Emporium, one can see the giant 'E' labelscar, as the building was never painted after the 'E' was removed. Almaden Plaza grew to 40.5 Acres when Costco came in 1996 (a time when this center was practically vacant with Emporium going bankrupt, Lucky's leaving and eventually the smaller shops leaving), was built on land not used for Highway 85.
Contains a Costco (large building to the top left), Hobby Lobby, Sports Basement (opening Fall 2025), Men's Wearhouse, Trader Joe's, and of course, a Starbucks.
