A historic building in Fell’s Point, Brown’s Wharf was originally built in the 1820’s and used for storing flour for export to Europe and importing coffee from South America. The coffee was shipped in barrels which would be rolled across the building’s slanted floors for the purpose of loading and unloading. To this day, some of the floors remain graded from their original state. In 1840, George Brown, son of Irish immigrant Alex Brown bought the property and the Wharf became a basis for the financial empire of Alex Brown and Sons. Brown’s Wharf was renovated by Constellation Real Estate and was completed in 1989. It is now a successful property mixing both retail and office suites.
