This Safeway (currently numbered at #1711), though modernized and expanded, was the first "Marina" Safeway (a distinct architectural design, named after the street), which the facade still incorporates. It was built in 1959 and, like the pick-up joint described in Armistead Maupin's 1970s book Tales of the City, still is unofficially known as "Dateway" (no matter which orientation you swing, apparently)
