London City Mission (London)

United Kingdom / England / London / A100 Tower Bridge Road, 175

This is now one of the centres of the London City Mission. It stands on the plinth of a baroque church which was severely damaged in the Second World War and later demolished.

Built: 1727 - 33
Architect: Hawksmoor and John James. The steeple of the original church was an experiment in fusing the gothic tradition of the spire with the classical style in fashion at the time. The result - not entirely successful - was a tower with a giant Corinthian column in place of a spire. A similar experiment was made around the same time at St Luke, Old Street, where an obelisk was substituted for the spire.
