Originally called Beer Lake because before the campus was dry, students would put their beer in the frozen lake during winter to keep it cold. It's now sometimes called Bear Lake because the University's mascot became the "Golden Grizzlies" in fall 1998.

  • Beer lake was named by a number of guys who lived in Fitzgerald House the summer it was dug, including Mike Miihalic, Mel Kozak, and myself, Arnold Krueger. We put together a casual football game one sunday afternoon. While we were playing one of us suggested that the lake needed a name, and I suggested Beer Lake, which was a pun on the name Bear Lake, a well known lake in California.
