The Essex New Town of Basildon has a population of 100,000 and indeed, an unfortunate reputation which matches that of urban Essex. Basildon was originally a small, scenic village where the modern town centre is today. In the 1960s it became a New Town and saw massive housing developments which absorbed the nearby villages of Laindon, Pitsea and Vange (the latter two were run-down hamlets at the time). Today, Basildon has a busy town centre and excellent links to London and Southend. It is the administrative centre for the Basildon District, which includes Billericay and Wickford.
Depeche Mode was formed here in 1980. The Basildon parliament constituency is famous for having voted for the winning party each election since it was formed in 1974.
