  • They say your car won't start back up because the bridge is haunted... either that or the satan worshippers will get you.
  • about 10 years ago when I went to Tech some other kids from there told me and my friends about it... It is a really scary place, especially with the witch's cemetary about a half a mile from it. We never stopped on the bridge, but during day light I went out there with a couple of friends and we saw two cows that had their heads cut off and put into a pentagram. I havent been back since.
  • Also, when we went at night we took a tape recorder and after we got it back to our apartment and could listen through all the screaming from everyone in the blazer we could hear the faint sound of a train. And the story goes a long time ago a man committed suicide on the tracks, but the railroad tracks have been gone for they say over 50 years.
  • The cemetery was never called the "witch's cemetery", I grew up in the area. The so-called "pentagram" on the tombstone that if you touched it would call a demon was a military star from a long forgotten decorated soldier. I went to TTU too and the hype the bridge received was way out there, I know people that actually remember George, before he died. Devil worshippers, pentagrams, witch's, etc, was all a bunch of hype, hate to burst your bubble. Try Adam's Tennessee and the Bell Witch for some good old fashioned scares, Buck Mountain is a very innocent place to have such insane tales created.
  • Actually I was born, raised and still live in Cookeville and also go to Tech(don't hold that against me). The "witches cemetary" is not the legal name- but that is what the locals call it. I'm actually taking my friend from Nashville there in 30 mins and that's why I Googled the place to show her. It's worth seeing, but I would say the weird rednecks/devil worshoppers would be more of a threat than spirits. Either way, I wouldn't suggest going alone (just in case). Happy visiting!!!
  • I took photos at crazy george's bridgee aug 27-2008 . had no premonitions or anything scary. there is some gang like spray paint there. train tracks are in place and look neww. i think the monterey library gflks have th tragic and true story about george's demise. i dont recall it exactly
  • Born, raised, and still live in Cookeville. I've heard just about everything about this place. My friends and I used to go up there every other week just to freak another friend out. I've shut my car off, gotten out and walked around. Nice place to spook your friends if they are scared. I had a car with a manual transmission back in high school and would turn the key off and coast across the bridge, then pop the clutch when I got to the other side. I told my friend I had no idea what happened, and her not knowing about stick shifts was scared out of her mind. It had about the same effect, when I shut off my car on the bridge, then turned the key without holding in the clutch. That really freaked her out too. I think the "witches" cemetery is called Stamps cemetery (it's right next to Stamps-Shady Road). It's a neat place because of the old graves that stick out of the ground. About the only thing you have to worry about are the weirdos. No ghosts, but a nice place for a ghost story.
  • I'm also a local to the area and have pranked many friends by pretending that the car wouldn't start back up after turning it off on the bridge. I don't know if this is true, but the way I heard it was Crazy George's bridge started out as a prank long after George had passed on. Basically, the whole story about him was made up, and some engineers put a big magnet underneath the bridge. When a car went over it, nothing would happen, but if you stopped and turned off your car, the magnetic field would inhibit some cars from being able to start again. You would have to manually push the car off of the bridge to start it. I know that magnets can have that effect on certain devices, but I can't imagine that anyone would go through the trouble to build a magnet that powerful. Seems like it would need power going to it and stuff.
  • This is so NOT true lol. Yes it has been called crazy George's bridge but there was never anyone killed in that area who was a drunken railroad worker. There was a young man who regularly coon hunted with an older man who regularly checked the train tracks at night in case of debris. After a church meeting one night the younger man walked down the tracks to meet the older man & at some point was struck & killed by the train. Also closer to Monterey there had been a young toddler struck & killed by the train but never anything about a drunken old man being killed by the train in that area. There was a man in the late 50's or early 60's who was beaten up & robbed by some local riff raff as he was walking to his family's home with his pay. They laid him on the tracks and left him for dead thinking their horrible deeds would be hidden by the poor mans death but the train only managed to take off both of his legs & leave him alive & in tremendous pain. As he screamed & begged for help his old teacher (who lived near by) just happened to hear him & ran to save his life. When the men that did this to him discovered he'd survived they burned his families home & everything they had in order to keep them quite. Back in those days the police in the area did nothing to the men who did this because they were afraid of them too. Evil deeds always seem to have a way of coming back to those who do them & years later the men who committed this one & several more all died horrible deaths. The leader of their local group of bullies was found beaten & hung in his jail cell. But as for crazy George I'm sorry to say he never existed. The legend has made for alot of excitement for the young people in the neighboring towns & has also led to lots of desecration of both local cemeteries (one if which is rumored to be the witches cemetery). Its has also led to rumours of young people practicing devil worship in this area. Thank goodness that now this area is more heavily patrolled by police & young people who've grown up locally know the story was never true but every now & then we still have to deal with desecration of family graves in the area mainly due to young people from the larger town next door who've heard these fake legends & try to do damage to this beautiful area & our old family graves in the area.
