Federal Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. of Port Newark was founded in 1942 on a Federal Emergency Shipbuilding contract and laid keels for 52 Cannon and John C. Butler-class destroyer escorts and then twelve Gearing-class destroyers during WWII. This yard worked in concert with Federal Shipbuilding’s main shipyard just north at Kearny Point.

With the exception of 7 ships, every ship launched at Federal Port Newark was comissioned before the end of WWII and went into active service, many seeing combat in the North Atlantic.

The yard closed after WWII and is currently the site of the main lot for the FAPS auto import facility and is owned by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.
