This was Tunnel #4 on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad line between St. Louis and Kansas City. There were a total of 4 tunnels on this line across Missouri, with the others at Freeburg, Argyle, and Eugene. Altogether, the Rock Island Railroad had 5 tunnels, none of which are currently in use. The CRI&P shut down at the end of March 1980, which was the last time trains traveled this route. Now nearly 30 years later, the rails remain in place as plans to reactivate the line surface from time to time.
