Naval Radio Transmitter Facility (NRTF) in Dixon was established in 1947. It serves as low/high frequency transmitter facility for the United States Pacific Fleet. The facility was operated continuously by the U.S. Navy until 1979, then converted to contractor operated facility. NRTF Dixon occupies approximately 1,314 acres, of which a majority is contracted out as farmland. The City of Dixon is located 5 miles northwest of the facility. NRTF Dixon consists of a housing area, main transmitter facility, several maintenance areas, agricultural usage, wildlife areas, and open space. The main transmitter and operations area occupies approximately 11 acres in the center of the facility. The housing area incorporates 30 acres along the northern property boundary. It currently serves as housing for migrant farm workers. Approximately 1,064 acres are leased for agricultural usage. Numerous transmitter/receiver antennas are distributed throughout the facility, largely in leased agricultural area.

The Navy Radio Transmitter Facility (NAVRADTRANSFAC) at Dixon, CA provides a contract operated LF/HF transmitter site in support of ship/shore and DIS requirements in the EASTPAC NAVCOMMAREA. The Dixon transmitting site, which is east of Vacaville, has a variety of very tall towers, shorter towers and curtain arrays. It was controlled by Naval Communications Station, Stockton, CA, which was closed in the late 1990s.

Today the site is operated by Rome Research Corporation on a contract basis for the Department of Defense. The antennas are mostly of the wideband conical variety, but there is also one ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) antenna located here.
