City Hall (London)

United Kingdom / England / London / More London Place
 office building, 2002_construction

Headquarters of the Greater London Authority from 2002 to 2021.

The building was designed by Sir Norman Foster and opened in July 2002. It has an unusual bulbous shape, intended to reduce the building's surface area and thus improve energy efficiency. City Hall was constructed on a site formerly occupied by wharves serving the Pool of London (a stretch of the River Thames). City Hall moved to a new site in Newham in December 2021.

  • The designers were inspired by the idea of a sphere hanging over the river, although this was quickly scaled down to a round building on the riverbank. It isn't Ken's Palace anymore: it belongs to Boris now. As does the rest of London.
