The Court Church in Innsbruck with the tomb of Emperor Maximilian I is the most important monument in Tyrol and the most magnificent emperor’s sepulchre in Europe. It is a testimony to the European court art that was spread far beyond the German-speaking world and for which Maximilian I and Ferdinand I commissioned the best artists of their time, including Albrecht Dürer, Peter Vischer the Elder, and Alexander Colin.
The court art in Innsbruck that was influenced by the House of Habsburg is international, but nevertheless rooted in local traditions. Few other rulers are remembered by the people as is Maximilian I (1459–1519). His name is associated with the central importance of Innsbruck in the Europe of those days.
