Mundok County (Mundŏk-gun), South Pyongan Province, DPRK.
This county was created from the western part of Anju in 1952. It draws its name from a piece of local history. In 612, Korea was invaded by the army of the Chinese Emperor Yang of Sui, who sent his force across the Liao River to conquer the Koguryo strongholds of Yodong (present-day Liaoning) and Pyongyang. They were, however, repulsed by the general Ŭlji Mundŏk, who decimated the Chinese forces; only 2,700 of the 350,000 men sent on the campaign returned. Ŭlji Mundŏk became a folk hero, and when the county was created in 1952, it was named in honor of the great victory he won near Anju.
