Mount Alab

Mount Alab, which is part of the Crocker Range, is located some 37 kilometres from the city centre of Kota Kinabalu. It is not a very well known mountain among locals, though residents of the countryside of Penampang might be more familiar with the name.

Spotting this mountain from the city isn't easy, because of two main factors. The most important factor is its height. Because it is over 1500 metres a.s.l, it gets very misty and covered by clouds very early, with a daily average time of 9 am. It is best seen during dawn or just after sunrise. On rare occasions, this mountain will be clear in view from the city.

Another factor is its distance from the city. It doesn't dominate the eastern sky of the city, most likely because of Terian Hill and Inobong Hill, that appears to be much bigger and nearer. One must be quite observant to spot the hill.

Among the easiest places to spot Mount Alab would be from the Karamunsing Flyover (east-bound), Foh Sang area, Bukit Padang, Petagas Flyover and from Terminal 1 of KKIA. Those with sharp vision can even make out telecommunication towers in the middle part of the ridge.

Those heading on the Penampang Tambunan Road will pass the western side of this mountain. There are no roads leading to the peak of this mountain.
