A private school was built here in 1887 and the 16 acres of grounds were planted up by the Earl of Eglinton's head gardener. It became a public school and was closed in 1972, the buildings being demolished in 1984. It is now a public park for the towns of the Garnock Valley and a centre for the North Ayrshire Council Ranger Service.
