The Gotoh Museum is located on the southwest periphery of Tokyo. Its founder was Gotoh Keita(1882-1959),the late chairman of the Tokyu Corporattion. His private collection of premodern Japanese, Chinese and Korean art was opened to the public in 1960.
Exhibits that are changed about seven times a year on a rotational basis are around 4,000 including many national treasures : tea-things, Chinese ceramics, picture scrolls and calligraphy deriving from Zen Buddhism, such as old writings in kana ( the Japanese alphabet ) and copies of ancient sutras, bronze mirrors, and swords. In particular, "Picture Scroll of The Tale of Genji," and "The Diary of Murasakishikibu" are eminent collections.
Special exhibitions offered in spring and autumn are popular and favorably received each time.

Temporarily closed for renovation until October 19, 2012.
