Los Feliz (Los Angeles, California)

Los Feliz (commonly pronounced, incorrectly, as "los FEE-liss"), is an artsy, trendy, gentrifying neighborhood of Hollywood just south of Griffith Park. Vermont Ave between Los Feliz Blvd and Hollywood Blvd is the cultural axis of this area, featuring hipster hangouts like the all-night eatery Fred 62, the Dresden, and many other unique shops and restaurants.

  • If you are going to tell people how not to pronounce it, why not tell them what the correct way is? I have lived here 15 years and everyone I know here in the area calls it "Los-FEE-Liz", like the Spanish pronounciation, which seems logical. Feliz in Spanish means happy, as in "Feliz Navidad", so why wouldn't it be pronounced exactly like it is in the Spanish phrase, since most things in Los Angeles are Hispanic related?
  • I believe that the correct pronunciation would be "Los Feh-LEES." Though Gringos prefer to Americanize the pronunciation as "Los FEE-liss."
  • it smells
  • The pronunciation is either Los "FEE-liss" or "FEE-liz"-- because the emphasis is generally on the first syllable, it is NOT the correct Spanish pronunciation of the word
