To recall: The charismatic Fernando Poe Jr. was Ronald Allan Poe in real life, who was born to Fernando Poe Sr. and Bessie Kelly on August 20, 1939; he died at age 65 on Dec. 14. 2004. His acting career spanned half a century during which he endeared himself to millions of movie fans for playing underdog characters who suffers a great deal but who at the end would overcome the odds and emerges truimphant over his enemies.

FPJ was also a director and scriptwriter (often in collaboration with prolific novelist Pablo Gomez) who used the pseudonyms L’Lanor (which is his name Ronald spelled backwards) and Ronwaldo Reyes (from his first real name and the Reyes from one of his favorite and first directors, Efren Reyes, Sr.).

FPJ is survived by his wife Susan Roces (Maria Jesusa Sonora) who he first married in civil rites on Dec. 16, 1968, and in church on Dec. 25, 1968; and children Mary Grace Poe-Llamanzares, Ronian Poe and Lovi Moran Poe.

FPJ studied at San Beda College where he finished his elementary education after which he went to various schools like San Sebastian and Mapua but dropped out on his sophomore year in high school when he had to pursue an acting career to help out his mother support the family. His father died of rabies in 1951 at age 35.

Among FPJ’s most memorable and blockbuster films include "Alupihang Dagat," "Asedillo," "Kapag Lumaban ang Api," "Santiago," "Ang Daigdig Ko’y Ikaw," "Zamboanga," "Ang Leon at ang Daga," "Perlas ng Silangan," "Muslim Magnum .357," "Roman Rapido," "Isang Bala Ka Lang," "Ang Padrino," "Kahit Konting Pagtingin," "Mga Alabok sa Lupa," "Batang Quiapo," "Ang Probinsyano," "Isusumbong Kita sa Tatay Ko," and "Kahit Butas ng Karayom Papasukin Ko."
