An older neighbourhood that was established in the early 1900s. It began as an affluent neighbourhood but went into decline. By the 1970s it had all the typical problems of an inner-city neighbourhood like crime, social problems and slum housing.

A community association was formed in 1976, and in th 1980s measures had been taken to control the spread of high-density and non-residential housing. Older homes were bought and renovated, and the area began a period of (re-)gentrification. Today the Cathedral Area has the highest income level of all inner-city neighbourhoods and is home to a thriving arts community.
