Athens' first burial ground. Originally extended further to the north up the side of Jackson Street. In the early 1960s when the art school building was under construction, bulldozers simply scraped up a large number of grave sites, bones, caskets, markers and all, and dumped them in an unmarked ditch off Nowhere Road north of town. This act sparked one of the first historic preservation efforts in Athens. Remaining acreage maintained by local preservation groups.
