London Heathrow Airport (IATA: LHR, ICAO: EGLL), in the London Borough of Hillingdon, is the primary airport serving the London area. It currently has four operational terminals (built in 1961, 1968, 1987, and 2008) and two parallel east-west runways on a site covering 12,14 sq km (4.69 sq mi). Heathrow opened on 31 May 1946 for commercial operation after originally operating as the Great West Aerodrome since June 1930. The airport has an annual capacity of over 65,000,000 passengers per annum. Heathrow is one of the most important hubs in Europe and the world, and claims to be the world's busiest international airport (depending on how passenger numbers are measured). It is also served by three London Underground stations that are on the Piccadilly Line.

  • Areoplanes land and take off here, in an effort to transport people and things to distances beyond a comfortable walk.
  • Interesting Place. Anybody needs to see it at least in the google map. Nowhere you can see this number of landed air crafts, landing frequency and taking off frequency. Managing this airport at this level is a huge task and it is appriciated.
  • Some say the world's busiest international airport is something to be proud of. Others think Heathrow is a disgrace. Whatever you think, this is where an American arrival visiting the UK was impressed by how welcoming an unknown family were - until they tried to take him home, thinking he was a long-lost brother. The airport is extremely busy, and tighter - and therefore slower - security measures have not helped. The new terminal 5 is set to give Heathrow the capacity to expand again. It is one of the best-connected airports: It is linked to the M4 and the M25, it has express and suburban services to Paddington and is linked to the London Underground.
  • Oh, and a person from Stevenage had almost completed his tour around the world (which included being stoned, robbed and chased) but gave up the remainder and caught a plane to Heathrow, where he hoped to cycle back to Stevenage to complete his tour. Unfortunately, his bike was crushed by a narrow gap on the bag dispenser in the reclaim hall.

  • In actual fact there used to be a village on this site called Heathrow which was totally obliterated in 1945 so the airport could be built. The village's name meant literally 'Row of houses on a heath'. The proposed third runway means that the village of Sipson to the north faces the same threat.
