Substandard M50 Interchange

Exit for Newent. To leave in either directions, you must slow down on the carriageway (there are no deacceleration or acceleration lanes). You are hurtled around a 90 degrees bend to the left and are slammed straight into a T-junction. To make things worse, there are no grassy areas between the sliproads, just painted triangles. Possibly the most substandard Motorway interchange in the UK.

  • The M50 was a very early motorway (started 1958) and so it was, of necessity, experimental. All the bridges are totally individual designs, and so are the interchanges. The fact is, nobody knew much about motorway design then, and the M50 was their "test bed". However, the mistakes made here did lead to better motorways elsewhere.
