The hotel is built on the site of the historic Bürgerbräukeller, a beer hall that was a gathering place for the Nazi party from 1920-1923. Hitler launched the Beer Hall Putsch there in 1923 and was arrested. After taking power in 1933, he held an annual reunion and re-enactment of the putsch at the beer hall. At the 1939 reunion, Georg Elser attempted to assassinate Hitler with a time bomb that went off after Hitler had already left. The beer hall was commandeered by the US occupation forces from 1945-1957, and then operated by Lowenbrau from 1958. The beer hall was demolished in 1979 and the Hilton was built on the site in 1989
