At a cost of $15 million, and built by the Del Webb Company, the Convention Center opened July 12, 1967.
That year, the center hosted 45,000 delegates and had to turn away many more for lack of adequate space. Twenty years later, the facility attracted almost 6 million guests and was still turning away business.
The original boasted of 400,000 square feet, including a 9,100-seat arena.
In 1969, 21 inches of rain fell, causing widespread damage in the Convention Center area. Improvements have been ongoing ever since and, the Convention Center continues to grow...
January 1974 – The first expansion of the Convention Center is completed.
December 1982 – The second expansion of the Convention Center is completed.
August 1990 – The third expansion of the Convention Center is completed.
January 1993 – The fourth expansion of the Convention Center is completed.
May 1998 – Phase 1 of Anaheim Convention Center expansion is completed, adding 74,000 sq. feet of exhibit space.
January 2000 – Phase II of the Anaheim Convention Center is completed.

  • The "flying saucer" convention center opened 5 days after I was born...just down the street at Anaheim Memorial.
