Gușterița, in German Hammersdorf, is a former medieval village mentioned in 1309, incorporated into the city in 1940.
This region is also believed to be the place where the Cedonia castra was located. The area has numerous archaeological finds, from roman statues to coins and bricks, but no actual building foundations or clear structures, most probably due to agricultural and building activity from the Middle ages onwards. Most finds were made in the area of the Lutheran cemetery.
A medieval fortified church was built in the beginning of the 13th century. The main volume of the church was modified in Gothic style in the end of the 15th century.
Current population is around 3500.
