---------------------------------------------
Area Information
Purulia is a backward and draught prone district in West Bengal, India. Baranti is a small picturesque hamlet by a beautiful lake surrounded by hillocks and forests under Santuri police station in this district. Massive deforestation during the 1970s spelt havoc on flora and fauna of the area. Inside the forest, a number of small hamlets are situated in scattered manner and most the dwellers are tribal and living below poverty line.
Muradi, a small railway station situated after 3 consecutive railway stations from Asansol (22km.), is 261 km away from Kolkata. Baranti or Ramchandrapur Irrigation Project can be reached from Muradi, by Trekker or Rickshaw. A water reservoir has been constructed by erecting a dam between Muradi Hill, at one side, and Baranti Hill, on the other. The water reservoir is being used for irrigation purpose and also for supplying drinking water to the local villages. The Panchkot Hill, at one side of the area and the Biharinath Hill, on the other, can be reached by trekking.
Ø The forest area is shrouded with trees like Sal, Mahua, Piyal, Palash and various natural medicinal plants.
Ø The forest is abode of faunas like Rabbits, Python, Porcupines, Wild Boars, Foxes, Wolves, various birds and Dears.
Ø The reservoir swarms with seasonal Migratory Birds.

Information about us
In 1995 the organization, ten young aspirants,( most of us are Government employees) started a new project in this place without taking any help from any quarter (merely capitalizing our hard Labour and meager pocket money). They created interest in social forestation and plantation among local people and it was a grand success. As a result, forest has grown again and population of wild animals has increased. Thousands of migratory birds now come to the lake. Baranti has now been established as an popular Eco-Tourism center. More than thousand people, mostly students and children come here every year for nature and wildlife study. Beyond that more than 10000 people gather here every year for picnic. The Organization engage in assisting them and keeping the place clean. The Organization is making efforts voluntarily in this direction, accordingly.
The Work of the Organization:
1. In spite of availability of irrigation facilities, cultivation and farming could not be done throughout the year. But because of our continuous encouragement, cultivation of economic crops has increased. At primary level, the organization conducted cultivation activities by their own infrastructure and their guest from Kalyani Krishi Viswavidyalaya regularly visited the place and provided local people and the organization with necessary advices.
2. In 1995, they developed a forest of Delbergia Sishoo tree on 1.5 acre of land and constructed a 2 rooms House. In the same year, they organized a conference of all Ban(forest) Committees of Saturi Block. The Honourable DFO of Purulia District was the Chief Guest in this conference. The principal objective of the conference was to encourage social forestation and to increase awareness regarding the necessity of forest and wild life conservation which is their regular work.
3. They planted Simul Tree of high-yielding variety, in this area, on experimental basis and that was a success. The trees are now being used for seed collection, as Mother-tree.
4. They are making necessary arrangements to conserve the trees of the forest and the hills and to observe and provide remedies to their ailments.
5. Conserve the fauna and to stop poaching.
6. Stop the poaching of migratory birds at Baranti Lake.
7. Distribute the plants and seeds of high-yielding variety for social forestation.
8. Encourage nature study and wild-life study.
