Roman Emperor ( Împăratul Romanilor) Hotel dates back to 1773 when Philipp Collignon renamed the old inn opened in 1555, which operated on the site of the present building at no. 6 .
In June 12th 1894 the construction of the hotel’s new building is started, being funded by the General Bank of Savings, which becomes also the owner. Architect: Friederich Maetz.
In September 7th 1895 the new hotel opens which originally had a restaurant and 44 rooms.
Instead of today’s great lounge, there was an open courtyard surrounded by arcades with a fountain in the middle (Arkadenhof).
In August 27th 1927 the lounge on the place of the former garden is opened. It had a glass-sliding roof, which was manually operated by a crank, kept until 1974.
The hotel has hosted an impressive number of personalities:

The current hotel:
Crown Prince Ferdinand of Romania and Princess Maria, along with Ionel Brătianu (1907), Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife (1912), the Dutch Minister Hendrik Müller von Mevenyke (April 1921), Mrs Danielle Mitterrand, hosted three German President, Roman Herzog, Karl Carstens (1981) and Johannes Rau, Prince Charles, Austrian President Franz Jonas (1969), presidents of Romania Ion Iliescu and Emil Constantinescu, etc..
