Stefan Karadzha Monument (Varna)

Bulgaria / Varna / Varna
 memorial, bust (sculpture), 1940s construction

A symbol of united Bulgaria is the bust-monument to the great revolutionary Stefan Karadzha (by the sculptor Kiril Todorov), inaugurated on November 10, 1940. It is to be found in the downtown area, at the point where two of Varna's thoroughfares, the "Knyaz Boris I" and the "Slivnitsa", intercept. Its erection was suggested by the Varna-based Dobroudzha Women's Culture-and-Education Charity Organization.
Stefan Karadzha (Stefan Todorov Dimov) was born on May 11, 1840 in the village Ichme - Stefan Karadzhovo today. It is famous for his revolutionary work, a participant in the Bulgarian national liberation movement. Along with Hadji Dimitar, he led a group of 129 people on July 6, 1868 and crossed the Danube River. In the Kanladere Area, nearby Vishovgrad, Stefan Karadzha was badly wounded and captured. On July 31, 1868 he was hanged.
