A suburb of Brisbane. Postcode - 4122. Originally named by Queensland Place Names Board 1 August 1967. Name and boundaries confirmed by Minister for Survey and Valuation, Urban and Regional Affairs 11 August 1975. Name derived from hill feature, which was named by Robert Dixon (1800-58) surveyor, in 1840, after Lieutenant George Gravatt (1815-1843) soldier, 28th Foot Regiment, British Army, who was Commandant, Moreton Bay Penal Settlement May-July 1839. He was born at Woolwich, England, and was commissioned Ensign in the 28th Foot Regiment in September 1837. Reportedly, the aborigines called it kaggur-mabul or caggara-mahbill, which means 'place of echidna' or 'echidna rests here'.
