Record run: first "car" to break the sound barrier in 1997
On October 15, 1997, the 54 foot long (16.5 m) Thrust-SSC, on solid aluminum wheels (no tires) and powered by two fighter-jet engines with afterburners reached an official 1,228 km/h (763 mph). Piloted by Andy Green, it broke the speed of sound in both directions of the run. It required a distance of 13 miles (21 km) to do this.
