In the early 1920s, American theatergoers' growing hunger for excess was treated to an assault of hyperbolic architecture. One such hyperbole was the 3,700-seat Metropolitan Theater, which opened its doors in Boston in 1924. The Metropolitan was dubbed "The Wonder Theater of the World" due to its spaciousness, vast domed ceiling, arched walls, marble statuary and ornate decor. In 1983, the theater was treated to a major renovation funded by computer magnate An Wang and reopened as the Wang Center for the Performing Arts. In early 2007, the name of the complex of theatres changed to the Citi Performing Arts Center).

However the theatre itself is still named the Wang, forming part of the Boch Center.
