These ruins are all that’s left of the once great Basing House, one of the biggest and grandest houses in Tudor England. It was visited by Henry the Eighth and Elizabeth the First, and most famously was under siege for two years during the Civil War until it was finally destroyed by Cromwell in 1645. The architect Inigo Jones was taking refuge in Basing House at the time.

Time Team have had an excavation on the site:

  • Being a site for an excavation of Time Team isn't the only reason it exists. This is why I've simplified it a bit.
  • I know this place well; I've visited many times and I've met the curator who knows much about the house including the New Palace and the site across the road. I never knew Time Team had done work on investigating it. I don't want an edit war here. Can we discuss this instead?
