The eight story, Beaux Arts building was constructed in 1906 for florists John Breitmeyer and Sons and was known as the Breitmeyer Building. It was among Detroit's first "tall" buildings in this area. Unique in that corner location, it has two facades and was the first elevator building to operation in Detroit. It was also known as the Breitmeyer-Tobin Building after its sale to Benjamin Tobin in 1944. Tobin was one of the first to lease office space to African Americans.
