The Waves (Newport, Rhode Island)

USA / Rhode Island / Newport / Newport, Rhode Island / Ledge Road
place with historical importance, cottage, estate (manor / mansion land)

'The Waves' was designed in 1927 by its owner, architect John Russell Pope (1874-1937), and built on the ruins of politician Charles Warren Lippitt's (1846-1924) former summer home, 'Breakwater', which had been destroyed by fire ca. 1924.

A&P grocery store heiress Josephine Hartford Bryce (ca. 1904-1992) was the next owner of 'The Waves'; her daughter Nuala, married Senator Claiborne Pell, and built a cottage, Pelican Lodge, at the northern end of the property. Following its purchase by Wanamaker's Department Store heir Barclay Warburton (1922-1983), 'The Waves' was divided into condominiums.

  • Built by John Russell Pope, architect of Jefferson Memorial, National Gallery of Art, central piece of Museum of Natural History, etc., as his own residence upon the foundation of Lippitt's Castle, destroyed by fire.
  • Pelican Ledge, the home of Senator Claiborne and Nuala Pell was built in 1952 on a portion of this land overlooking Bailey's Beach. http://www.projo.com/extra/2005/thepells/slideshows/morephotos/
  • i believe it was owned not by the Wanamaker family but by the Clothier family of Philadelphia, founding member of Strawbridge & Clothier Department Store in Philadelphia.
