mine, mining, lead production / processing, zinc mine/processing
This is the site of the largest lead-zinc mine in the USA, with over 200 miles of underground workings and tunnels. The Bunker Hill mine was discovered in 1885, and eventually led to the construction of the Bunker Hill smelter at Kellogg. For most if its life, the mine was accessed by the two-mile-long Kellogg Tunnel which originated in Kellogg. The mine closed in 1981, but reopened for a short time from 1988-91. With the current high price of silver, there is renewed interest in exploring for additional orebodies.
