This is a flooded (2006) fuller's earth open cast mine.

Fuller's earth is a very fine clay laid down as volcanic ash in water. This happened in the Mesozoic Era (dionsaur times) and as a result often contains many period fossils.

It is very oleophilic, it is attracted to oils and fats. It has mostly been used to adsorb fats, such as lanolin, from raw sheared wool prior to further processing. It also has other medical, chemical and industrial uses.

This deposit has been mined by Laporte Industries but has now been abandoned and allowed to fill naturally to the level of the local water table.
