Santa Rosa Island Air Force Station

USA / California / Isla Vista /
Cold War 1947-1991, closed / former military, United States Air Force, historic ruins, early warning radar

The station has been "restored" to a natural setting. Callsign: Art.

Activation of this site using an AN/CPS-6B radar allowed for the shutdown of Lashup sites at Camp Cooke (L-41) and Port Hueneme (L-42). In 1952 the 669th AC&W Squadron operated two AN/FPS-10 radars at this island location. In 1955 the Air Force added an AN/FPS-3 search radar to the facility. During the following year, an AN/GPS-3 search radar was also added. 1958 saw the addition of an AN/MPS-14 long-range height-finder radar. Operations ceased on 31 March 1963, when the 669th moved to Lompoc AFS (RP-15).

Comments

  • I want the Studebaker in pic #3.
  • Photo of radar tower with radome is not Santa Rosa Island AFS (as once thought). Instead, it is Boron AFS, CA (before the AN/FPS-35 was installed).
