FIU was founded in 1965 and opened for classes in 1972 with 5,667 students - the largest opening day enrollment in U.S. collegiate history. Today, FIU is one of Florida's leading research university, with close to 40,000 students, almost 1,700 full-time faculty and 150,500 alumni, making it the largest university in South Florida and the 13th-largest university in the United States.

The University offers more than 280 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs in 27 colleges and schools: Accounting, Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Computing and Information Sciences, Education, Engineering & Computing, Health, Health and Urban Affairs, Honors College, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Journalism and Mass Communication, Law, Medicine, Music, Nursing, Public Health, and Social Work/Policy and Management.
