Segedunum - Roman Fort

United Kingdom / England / Wallsend / A187 Buddle Street
archaeological site, fortification, Roman Empire, interesting place, exhibition centre

This is the site of Segedunum, the Roman fortifiction at the end of Hadrians Wall in a borough that still retains the name 'Wallsend'.
The actual walls and floors of the roman buildings are marked out with different coloured gravel where the stone floor surfaces do not exist. The line of the wall itself can be seen briefly leaving the south-east corner of the fort and running towards the river.
Immediately to the east of the site is a large visitor centre with a museum and cafe and a tall viewing tower so visitors can get an overview of the layout as you have here.
