Colonial-era copper mine, active from 1705 through the 1750s, that was converted into a revolutionary era prison. The first state prison in the United States, it was used between 1773 and 1827, and from 1776 to 1782 specifically to hold prisoners of war during the Revolutionary War. Today the site is maintained as a museum, and the surrounding land as an archeological and wildlife preserve.

The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), where it is designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark for its political, social and military significance.
