Home of the Michigan State University Spartan football team, opened in 1923, expanded and refurbished over the years. With the addition of luxury boxes and club seats in 2004-2005, the seating capacity grew from 72,027 to 75,005, making it the Big Ten's fifth largest stadium. Spartan Stadium has been recognized as one of the most scenic college football venues in the country.
The stadium also holds the world record for the largest ice hockey crowd in history. On October 6, 2001, a rink was laid out in the stadium for Michigan State's season-opening game against archrival Michigan. Dubbed "The Cold War", 74,554 watched No. 1 nationally ranked Michigan State and No. 4 nationally ranked Michigan skate to a 3-3 tie.
Speaking of ties, ABC's Chris Schenkel & Bud Wilkinson have the call of the 1966 "Game of the Century". It was the last game of the season--Notre Dame was ranked No. 1 and MSU was ranked No. 2 for the entire season prior to the game. For perhaps the first time the full-bore power of the modern media (TV, radio, newspapers, magazines) was focused on one game. In the closing moments Notre Dame settles for a 10-10 tie rather than risking a loss and the MSU home crowd boos. No tie-breakers in college football in 1966:
