town, suburb
Batu Ferringhi is a suburb within the city of George Town. It is situated approximately 11km northwest of the city centre, encompassing the northernmost tip of Penang Island between Teluk Bahang to the west and Tanjung Bungah to the southeast. With stretches of golden beaches facing the vast Malacca Strait, Batu Ferringhi is one of Penang's top tourist destinations. Among the several hotels hugging the beaches are Hard Rock Hotel, Double Tree by Hilton, Golden Sands Resort and Park Royal Resort.
Sir James Lancaster, a British privateer, discovered this area in 1592 on board the Edward Bonaventure. However, it was only in the 1970s when Batu Ferringhi's beaches were developed as a tourist attraction. Batu Ferringhi has since experienced rapid urbanisation, turning it into an upscale suburb. One of the most favoured areas for expatriates within George Town, Batu Ferringhi is also home to Uplands International School, one of the top international schools in Penang.
Batu Ferringhi was among the worst-hit areas in Penang during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
On a clear day, Mount Jerai, which lies in Kedah, can be seen from the beaches of Batu Ferringhi. Tourists at Batu Ferringhi could enjoy a variety of leisure activities as well, including paragliding, horseback-riding and a bustling night market selling knock-off goods.
