Teluk Bahang

Teluk Bahang is a suburb within the city of George Town. It encompasses the northwestern tip of Penang Island between Batu Ferringhi to the east and Pantai Acheh to the south, about 13.5km west of the city centre. Teluk Bahang is home to the Penang National Park, the world's smallest national park, in addition to the various eco-friendly tourist attractions such as Entopia Butterfly Farm, the Tropical Spice Garden and the ESCAPE theme park, which is equipped with the world's longest water slide.

Teluk Bahang was formerly a fishing village until the latter half of the 20th century, when the suburb was developed to attract tourists seeking natural attractions. In 1999, the Teluk Bahang Dam, the largest dam within the city of George Town, was completed. The dam has since become the venue for the annual Penang International Dragon Boat Festival.

In 2004, Teluk Bahang was among the hardest-hit areas during the Indian Ocean tsunami.

Comments

  • Teluk Bahang is the western-most stretch along the tourist belt of Penang Island. At the most parts, it is still very much a sleepy fishing village, although a few major hotels have opened here. Teluk Bahang suffered some damage in the 2004 tsunami, but has since rehabilitated itself entirely.
