Abbey Chapter House

So called as a chapter from the Rule of St Benedict would have been read aloud to the community before the business of the day was started, duties allocated, discipline dispensed etc. The chapter house was normally situated to the east of the cloister.

Other rooms on this side of the cloister might include a parlour (as here), where the monks could converse with each other (when neccessary, within certain guidelines), a calefactory (or warming room), where they might warm themselves during inclement weather (the fire in the warming house only would be lit between 1st November and Good Friday).
