This natural lake is a graben formed by the great earthquake of 26 March 1872. This part of the valley floor dropped about 20 feet relative to the Inyo Mountains to the east and the Sierra Nevada to the west.

The lake is named for the Diaz brothers, Rafael and Eleuterio, who came here from Chile in the 1860s to run a cattle ranch, which was eventually sold to the City of Los Angeles for the water rights.
