The historic core of the VA hospital, which dates mostly to the mid 1930s, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district. It consists of mostly Colonial Revival and Neoclassical-style architecture. This historic portion of the complex was constructed with assistance from the Public Works Administration (PWA), a New Deal program that operated during the Great Depression between 1933 and 1944. The program provided funds to private contractors to build large-scale projects proposed by states as a means of economic stimulus.
