One of Village Creek State Park's historic resources is a particularly well-preserved section of the so-called "Memphis to Little Rock Road", an unpaved military road dating to 1828. Used heavily by pioneer settlers heading west, the road took on additional significance in the 1830s when it was used in the forced migration of members of various regional Native American tribes during what came to be called the Cherokee Trail of Tears. The road segment passes just south of Lake Austell and continues in a southeastern direction for a total of about 1.5 miles. The road segment is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as "Memphis to Little Rock Road - Village Creek Segment".
