On March 26, 1997, members of the Heaven's Gate cult committed mass suicide (in conjunction with the arrival of the Hale-Bopp Comet, which they believed was followed by an alien spaceship to rescue them). The event resulted in the death of 39 people.

Due to all the unwanted media attention, as well as all the people driving to find the home: The neighbors bought and demolished the original house and had the street renamed.

  • Great find. The neighbors bought and demolished the original home (due to unwanted attention), renamed the street --but the paper trail leads here.
  • Made the updates, I remember when they announced the home's purchase by neighbors, as well as its destruction. Still... how weird must it be to live on the same spot that 38 people died?
  • The image at Yahoo maps shows a cleared lot at this site. http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py#mvt=h&lat=33.046128&lon=-117.203861&zoom=18&q1=18239%2520Paseo%2520Victoria%252C%2520Rancho%2520Santa%2520Fe%252C%2520CA
  • I know I'm splitting hairs, but it was 39 people not 38.
  • For the day, they were highly intelligent people. So what went wrong ?, maybe nothing. Maybe Suicide cults amongst Humans are like pods of healthy whales that suddenly, for no apparent reason beach themselves and die.
